Smashed in Class But It's a Great Day!

Ahh, good day so far.

In the morning MMA class, we did…um..I don’t know. I kind of forget. In one eye and out the other, right? In rolling at the end of class, I basically got crushed again and again by the guys. Which sucked. But I am okay with that, as I said, because I know it’s part of the learning process, especially when these guys are big and strong and I have to have solid technique to be able to submit these guys…which is being worked on. *Ahem*

I am quickly controlled into their guard, and just on the bottom while they mount me and I am trying to escape, fruitlessly. So in my private lesson with Andrew that followed MMA class, I wanted to review how do I stay out of someone’s guard, and consequently how to get out after being mounted.

How to not get in their guard: control their knees, ankles, etc. Constantly adjust your grip so they can’t control you, and you control them. (Easier said than done, of course.)

How to get out of being mounted:

  • bridge up to pop them off and when they base their arms out, grab one arm and on the same side put your foot outside theirs, and sweep them in the direction of your hooked arm
  • if they base with the other hand, grab THAT arm and roll now the opposite direction
  • if they base with their foot, put both hands under their leg and scooch out from under them, and keep close to take their back
  • if they won’t base out with their arms or feet, then pop your hips, push them up with your hands at their hips, and put both your shins in between their legs (like butterfly guard?)

We also went over how to still get an arm bar if they brace their hands together:

  • push the far arm’s bicep with your foot closest to their waist to break the link and get the arm
  • if that doesn’t work, figure 4 your wrist and tear their arm back and side to break the link and get the arm
  • if that doesn’t work, hook your arm around their elbow and leg, and sit back to break the link and get the arm (I like this one the best)
  • if that doesn’t work, you can try to sit up and get them into a triangle

It is a crazy hot and humid but GORGEOUS day today! Riding back to my place after class, it felt amazing! I love riding my motorbike in the hot sun, wind providing some relief, on this nice and quiet road a short ways to my place. It’s perfect. I showered, sprayed on my rubbing alcohol to my fresh wounds(!), and came downstairs to devour a fresh coconut, a little pineapple, and a Thai omelet with chicken and veggies , topped with ketchup.

After some digestion time, it’s time to go back to Tiger for a little Muay Thai!

Then later on this afternoon and evening…what should I do? Watch the evening MMA class? TAKE the evening MMA class? Ride my motorbike to terroritories I’ve not yet explored? None of the above?
