Figure Prep Update, Healthy Orange Chicken, Cauliflower Rice, & Gratitude

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Hey peeps! I want to let you know at least weekly how my figure prep is going. So it’s time! This past week I didn’t lose any weight, which was somewhat concerning to me, as I only have (as of today) 9 weeks and 2 days left until my show! I have stayed consistently clean in my diet and following my trainer’s workout n supplement specifications…but my body seemed pretty much the same. Yesterday I checked in with her though, broke her the news of no weight loss, and was sooo curious what her response would be. You know what she said? Don’t worry about it! We are switching up my diet the tiniest bit, and adding a little bit more cardio, but for the most part we are keeping everything the same. She assures me that it’s okay to not lose weight every week, and that I shouldn’t freak out and we are on track. Which is reassuring. Because I was ready to freak out ;) I am NOT ready to get on stage, but she thinks I can make it happen in 9 weeks and 2 days, and I am trusting her!

Yesterday I went grocery shopping and what do you know there went my afternoon in the kitchen! I made a healthified orange chicken recipe and cauliflower rice recipe and was SO EXCITED to recreate Panda Express in my kitchen!!!! Oh my frikkinn goodddd shuutt uppp gooodd niigghhtt i will DIE i love that stuff humina humina humina humina huh WHAT?! OOPS sorry. I was in my battered fried fantasy. SO I was excited to try this out. This is what I did:

*Healthified Orange Chicken*

Sautee boneless skinless diced chicken breast in a wok in some light cooking spray and liquid egg whites.

Create a sauce with DaVinci sugar free orange syrup, low sodium soy sauce, mustard, pepper, red pepper flakes, basil, apple cider vinegar, ginger, garlic powder, and glucomannan powder. Pour on top of the chicken while finishing cooking. Viole.

*Cauliflower Rice*

Put chopped cauliflower into a vitamix, add water, and pulse about three times. Strain. Sautee the cauliflower in the wok with chopped mushrooms, minced onions, and garlic. At end, sprinkle with green onions.

The verdict? It was yummy! But no Panda Express. It was…healthy. Guess you can’t expect battered and fried goodness with such a clean recipe lol. Oh well I tried!

On the go eating: my tupperware with a meal of 6 oz orange chicken and 1/2 cup cauliflower rice:

orangechickencauliflowerrice

If you’re NOT on contest prep, you can add some cornstarch, orange juice, or other type thing to the orange chicken recipe to make it yummier. And for the cauliflower rice recipe, you can add sesame oil, diced carrots, onions, peas, etc, whatever you want to make it more satisfying. I, on the other hand, used minimal ingredients to stick to my diet ;) Like the good girl little that I am, indeed!

Lastly, I wanted to remind us all to- corny yes but honest- practice the attitude of gratitude. Every morning I give thanks and I just wanted to share with you some of the things I am grateful for.

I am grateful for Sasha, who inspires me; Sarah who is a super cool cat; my cousin for being so amazingly supportive; Akane for her expert assistance; Ashley for providing me with an awesome new professional home; and Lana for being an incredible teacher who stokes my motivation.

I am grateful for my fantastic health; I am blessed to feel healthy and strong; I am blessed to feel so focused!

I am blessed to have family that loves me.

I am thankful for opportunities to grow mentally, physically, spiritually, interpersonally, and in other “ally” ways; I am blessed to live in the wonderful, diverse, and HUGE bay area!

Until next time <3

Figure, “Stretch Exercise Eat” shirt, The Daily Love

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

Yesterday:

Started to work on posing. I put on my heels, and Akane showed me the “mandatory” poses and the “model” pose. The lat spread is definitely the hardest part- gonna have to work on it! (among everything else)

Today:

Cardio done- CHECK! Did it with a friend so actually time FLEW by- YES!

Legs done- CHECK! I don’t think I hit it “hard” (sad face) but I did hit it “all” (happy face). This week of weight training hasn’t been as bad as it was last week. I think I am still being cautious in terms of pushing intensity/load because of how tired I felt last week, and I’m not trying to recreate that. But I wonder if I hit it hard enough, because despite 2-2.5 hours in the gym today altogether, I really don’t feel at all sore or tired. Maybe I should just count it as a blessing?

New shirt in the mail- CHECK! I came home and got a person’s favorite thing to come home to- a package- yayyy!!! It was from my friend in Korea, the brain behind Stretch Exercise Eat, a really cool multi-faceted blog that approaches physical and mental health from so many unique angles. I even had the privilege of hanging out with him live in person when I was in Korea! It was awesome. And he was ever so kind to send me a shirt.

Week 1 Figure Comp Training- it’s going…

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

So! Week one of contest prep for my first figure competition is completed- diet and exercise. I got my heels in the mail but have only managed to put them on once- they are sitting in my living room, in hopes of being put on and me practicing walking in them, but so far that’s not been the case.

heels

I have gone through one week of weights + cardio + diet and so far it’s going fine. For the most part each day is a different body part/body parts, and AM fasted cardio is every single day. I have been feeling pretty weak, so I wonder if it’s lack of recovery, lack of carbs, if I’m losing muscle, or a combination of all three. My weight is going down, but I wonder if it’s water and/or muscle. BUT there’s still 10 week and 5 days left, so still plenty of time to make changes. Following coach’s recommendations!

Yesterday was the most fun training day for me, as it is the one day that I’m allowed to go balls to the wall. Eliciting BEASTMODE! Which is my favorite/specialty.

7755961-runner-female-running-fast-in-forest-motion-blurred-image-of-beautiful-asian--caucasian-woman-athlet (not me, btw! stock photo)

Long, slow, endurance type of training is not my thing. Sprints, high heart rate- I love that! So yesterday I was allowed to do my thing. Butt kicks, high knees, bounding, karaokes, multi-planar jump squats, and SPRINTS made me a happy girl. Then I met a friend’s friend who wants to fight MMA and it was fun to spar her in boxing and roll with her, because I totally (lightly) punched her in the face and caught her in a few submissions, so it made me feel not so terrible cuz I’m used to being on the bottom of the skill totem pole ;)

Today I was able to complete about 70% of my workout in the gym this morning, then it was time to go to MMA class. Class itself was fun as always, but then Sarah wanted to roll afterwards and I felt really disappointed in myself that I had the strength of a dying lizard.

lolcat-tired

I could barely resist her, because I am so tired! So I stopped and had her roll with other peeps who could sustain her energy level. When Dude was like “You’re done?” I was like “yeah I’m done. I’m training multiple times a day!” He’s like “So do we!”….But…um…that’s true…but I guess it’s different when you don’t have the nutrition or supplementation to sustain you. I remember I used to train for hours upon hours upon hours and be totally beastmode, but that’s when I wasn’t restricting my diet/calories/carbs, and that’s when I was drinking tons of caffeine or intaking other sources of “energy” like Jack3d a.k.a my boyfriend!!!

jack3d

That shit would have me going end.less.ly. And I know they take those supps that keep them going. Without drugs like caffeine, I feel like a “regular” person ;) A one or two hour quitter. Can’t do hours upon hours. I am guessing I’ll bring the supps back before I up the cals and carbs, so hopefully my bleak, caffeine-less life will not be too much longer ;) It’s actually a self-imposed hiatus; a challenge to myself to go at least a month without caffeine. So I have a little while longer to go…

I was pleased that I look a little smaller but Sarah was like “I can’t wait for your experiment to be done. I want you to have more energy when we roll!” She said I look smaller, but that I shouldn’t feel so tired. I think that’s how it goes in figure? We’re depleting our bodies, and feeling low energy is a side effect, no?

Mona Liza Reyes figure competitor 3

I’m about to go and finish the last 30% of my workout I need to complete today. 10 weeks and 5 days, baby! I have a lot of progress I need to make!

Sky High Workout

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Today I ate some of the food that Sasha and I prepared last week. It’s almost done. We had made a week’s worth of chicken, kale, rice, egg whites and oatmeal, etc etc etc. (Sorry for the blurry iphone pic)

chickenkalerice

It was neat to revisit that style of eating and next batch I will personalize it a bit more with a LOT more veggies.

I finally had a great workout today, including visiting the Sky High in Concord, CA, (a trampoline wonderland) and hitting some weights.

Tonight we’re watching the GSP/Shields fight and I’m going out for Sasha’s birthday party but only because it’s her! ;)

Tomorrow I have a full client load so can’t stay out too too late.

~Lots of love~

Trying New Things: AERIAL CONDITIONING

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

I am going through a period of wanting to try new things. I love cross training, so today I decided to try aerial conditioning. We started out with a warm up, then we went over a few skills on the trapeze, then we went over a few skills on the tissue. Or it is called Spanish web? Or same thing? In any case, it was pretty fun and came pretty quickly for me, I think because of my gymnastics background. Its great for grip strength, core, and upper body! :) Here is a quick video of me climbing the tissue, as well as practicing a trick the teacher showed me, called the Frog. The angle of the video is a little off, so you can’t see TOO clearly that my legs look kind of like a frog, but I think you can hopefully see well enough why it’s called what it’s called ;) Have a great day! <3

Now offering personal training in San Francisco!

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

Ch-ch-ch-changes! The only constant in life is change, right?!

I will be taking a turn and joining two new gyms.

In Mountain View, I will be training out of Evolution Trainers on Tuesdays and Sundays.

Evolution2

“Voted #1 Best Health Club in Silicon Valley by City Search and by San Jose Magazine, Evolution Trainers boasts the powerful combination of a state-of-the-art training environment and the industry’s top fitness and performance experts.”

The other days of the week, I will be training out of Diakadi Body in San Francisco!

Diakadi1

“DIAKADI Body is San Francisco’s most comprehensive performance + wellness center. Since opening in 2004 as the city’s largest personal training-only facility, owners Billy Polson and Mike Clausen have worked diligently to gather a portfolio of the industry’s premier lifestyle practitioners. Such focus and drive has awarded DIAKADI Body the title ‘Best Place to Get Fit’ by San Francisco Magazine. DIAKADI practitioners have also been selected as the Top Personal Trainers in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle and the Top 100 Trainers in the US by Men’s Journal Magazine.”

Come see me at either location! Both facilities are amazing and the trainers are top-notch! Neither gyms require membership fees, and of course offer free towel service and other amenities.

I am excited to now be offering personal training services in the busy city of San Francisco! If you or someone you know is looking to get in shape in SF…I am now at your service! ;)

Delightfully yours in health~

B-girl Practice Session Aug 2008

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

bgirl_by_karla_areli(art from here)
I got footage from a practice session from August 2008! Wow! What a different world that was! That’s not even three years ago, but SO MUCH has changed. I was so into b-girling back then…not so much the case any more. I hardly dance at all anymore, period. Am thinking I may get back into it…but I don’t know about breaking. It’s so hardcore! I’m an old lady ;) That stuff is for kids! Seriously, like 12 year olds. Dunno if my body is up for all the craziness. And I’m into a different “scene” now. I used to be into the baggy sweats- now I’m all about the Lululemmon, if that is a helpful analogy ;) Anyway, it was interesting to see this footage. Although I was clearly practicing and tired- hence not very crisp- you can get a sense of my style and skill set. You can also see why I love bodyweight exercises and unconventional methods of improving fitness- it’s so much fun and gets you so strong!

Joaquin Miller Park Trails

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

A few days ago, I felt inspired to visit some trails I used to beat many years ago, when I lived in another city. I was shocked I was still able to find the exact trails I used to frequent! I just kept on driving, waiting for familiar markers, left, right, left, right, making turns, eyes open, trying to figure out where I was going…and ended up at my old trails! It was amazing. The scenery was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. The ground was soft and littered with sand, rocks, branches. Just how I like it. Most of the time I ran by myself, just me and my breathing, jogging and sprinting solo through the forest, elevating and descending, trying to get lost and at the same time make sure I remember which turns I took. Sometimes I would pass by someone walking their dog, and I would feel longing for me to take my pup out along these trails and run run run. When things settle down, maybe I’ll get a dog.

I decided that I would make visiting this trail a habit. I will be moving and will no longer be close to my favorite gym, which has totally spoiled me. The gym by my new place feels highly inadequate, so I decided that instead I will start trail running and visiting different hiking spots and beaches and soak in the sun as the weather warms.

Here are some views from the gorgeous trail from a few days ago.

Are You a Magic Seeker? ->By ChickenTuna

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

I. love. this. Great motivation! For me…and to spread to my clients! When they are quibbling about not seeing results after one workout and one clean meal…or people asking me about how effective L-Carnitine is or anything else…yet their diet is not 100%…I want to say “what’s the point??”…no supplement can counteract an inconsistent diet…Anyway, “ChickenTuna” has been a contributing member of BodySpace (associated with BodyBuilding.com) for many years now and her abs are more than memorable. Yes, I know some of you (esp. gals) would think her body is too much, but personally I think she looks phenomenal. And her message is fantastic. I came across this on her website and I MUST SHARE. Read this and remember this. Everyday.

ARE YOU A MAGIC SEEKER?

Are you trying to find the ‘right fat burner’ that will give you a fit body tomorrow while you are still enjoying your cakes, cookies, ice cream and pizza?

Are you looking for the ‘right exercise’ that will make a certain body part look perfect after just one session?

Are you not even concerned with exercise or eating right, and looking for a magical potion, book or scheme to lose weight and be fit?

Are you eating 5 or 6 small healthy meals a day but thinking there is a magical combination of food and eating times? …so after over analyzing food plans for months and months… you think maybe you need one less serving of carbs or an extra serving of protein and then you will wake up the next day with your dream body once you crack this crazy caper of finding the right magical nutrition combination that everyone is keeping secret from you?  Or maybe you’ve been eating right for an entire 3 days and you are wondering why your body hasn’t transformed yet.  There is no secret magical food combination.  In most cases of over analyzing and micro managing food plans, the problem is not the plan.. it’s YOU!  You are not following it or eating lots of crap in addition,  thinking ‘what difference will a little cookie or pizza make’ and you are sabotaging results.

Are you debating if you need to do your weight training in a full body work out style, or a body part split?  Or maybe overanalyzing whether you should do weights first or cardio first?   And once you figure out the right answer you will be in top shape after one session?  Either style workout is fine as long as you do it consistently.

Are you attempting to figure out if eating oatmeal is a better carb than brown rice?  If so, you are seriously seeking some magic.  It doesn’t matter, they are both good carbs to eat.

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you are searching for magic and probably won’t reach your goals until you get real about being consistent, dedicated, and hard working all the time to reach your fitness goals over a long period of time, not 2 days.

Many people are in complete denial that exercising and eating right consistently is required to be fit.   Most problems happen when people are looking for  a scheme to eat all the food they love and also have the best looking body possible.  It comes down to a choice.   I know if I were eating crappy foods I love everyday ( like peanut butter cheesecake) I would not have a fit looking body and would not be happy about that, and nobody would be surfing into my website to find out about being fit because I would be in terrible shape.

Magical exercises don’t exist.  Magical routines do not exist.   If legs are your weak spot, do LEG exercises. Make sense?  If arms are what you want to focus on… do ARM exercises.  If any magic happens, it is when you do your workouts consistently, when you work HARD while working out, and  when you eat right all the time.  There is no magical routine.   Regardless of all the exercising you do, you will no see any defined muscles or have that ‘toned’ look unless you lower your bodyfat.

Magical food combinations don’t exist… All you can do is eat the proper amount of food for your goals and eliminate the wrong food.  Nutrition and workouts can always be improved, but there is no magic formula.   If you want to see any magic happen, stop eating crap for a few weeks and you’ll be amazed.

Progress takes time and only happens when you are consistent,  so don’t give up.

Advice for Success

1.  When you don’t feel like doing your workout, do it anyway.  You’ll feel better afterwards.

2.  When you feel like eating pizza for dinner, eat grilled chicken instead, you will survive.  You’ll feel great about your choice the next day.

3.  Keep doing the above every week consistently.  Consistency is KEY.

You can  keep  searching, hoping and praying there is magical potion, scheme, or pill to get you where you want to be, but you’ll just keep spinning your wheels.  You already know what you need to do… put down the crap and you won’t be wondering where your results are because you will see them for yourself.

It would be really nice if you could go out buy some cream, rub it on your ass, and get rid of cellulite… but its just not going to happen that way.  Cellulite goes away as your bodyfat goes down by eating right and exercising consistently.

Why is this section here?  Because over the past 17 years while I’ve been struggling each week to squeeze in my workouts on a regular basis, and say no thank you to all the junk food that is offered to me each day… I have seen many people around me try every scheme possible, (anything but eating right and exercising)  from pills to crazy diet schemes, and I have yet to see anyone ever have any success or achieve becoming fit that way.

Please do not write me and ask me about taking pills or any secrets or tips.. if you do, you really don’t get it.  Get yourself a big serving of hard work and sacrifice, swallow it down, and digest it.

>>Awesome, right?! Absolutely perfectly well said, IMO. How do you feel about this?
